SPANISH LEMON SHIPMENT TO CHINA LEAVES SOUR TASTE, AS CARGO DEEMED ILLEGAL
A fall in citrus crop production for the past two years in China has bestowedopportunity upon foreign producers capable of increasing shipments to China.Local production has been affected by hurricanes in the south of the country, andcitrus greening disease in other locations.
Last week, one Spanish producer was left with a sour taste after a shipment oflemons and oranges were destroyed upon arrival at Chinese ports. Not a goodlook for Spanish producers and the authorities backing them.
On Tuesday the 15th of March, two thousand crates were destroyed upon arrival, deemed insufficient to meeting requirements. China’s quality control agency hadalready warned Spanish authorities of the suspect shipment, and after the cargofailed to produce official documentation the entire shipment was buried inquicklime to avoid risk of infestations.
Spain has been late to he table for citrus exports, with the country’s first cargoarriving to China in 2014. In just one year, export values of citrus from Spain toChina tripled, leaving Spanish authorities sensitive to damaging relationships.
China itself is a large exporter, usually shipping out 500,000 metric tons eachyear to East Asia, Russia and the Middle East.
Spanish agricultural exporters are currently working toward new protocols with China to export grapes, prunes and peaches. Maintaining strict quality controlchecks and maintaining correct documentation is paramount to any chances ofcracking the local market.
